Lenses are a 10D's best friends
This posting is also known as "Lenses for wimps."
Beautiful lenses are the best things for your 10D. When selecting a lens, I first think about my photography style. I like to take landscape pictures; wide-angle lenses like the Canon 17-40 are my favorite. The 28-135 is for outdoors everyday people pictures. The bokeh is kind of OK (not spectacular), so it can also be used as a portrait lens. The 200 prime is for fast-action sports and animals. What I'm missing is a lens that will perform well in low-light indoors settings...useful for indoors people pictures and maybe also photojournalistic-type people pictures. :D For that, I'm eyeing one of the Canon primes (85mm, 100mm, 135mm).
My second consideration is size and weight. Yes, I am a wimp -- 700 grams is as far as I can go. I don't plan on getting any bigger (longer) lenses because they are plain too heavy for me to carry. The new Canon 70-300 DO IS is an interesting candidate because it is light...but the pictures I've seen so far are too soft for my liking.
The new prices that I list here are from the stores listed in the new equipment section. The used prices are from months of obsessively reading photo.net and fredmiranda.com.
What I have:
Lens | Weight (g) | Price (new) | Price (used) |
Canon 200mm 2.8 mkI "L" | 790 | $620 (mkII) | $460 (mkI) |
Canon 17-40 F4 "L" | 425 | $700 | $550-$600 |
Canon 28-135 IS | 549 | $400 | $300-$350 |
What I'm eyeing:
The following are lenses that have received good reviews and are light-weight enough (< 700 g) for me to carry. Most of them already overlap with the range of my current lenses. I don't know if I'll get any of them, though the primes are pretty nice especially for low-light or bokeh.
